1) How many characters will join up in Suikoden I?

Answer: There are 108 characters that you can recruited in Suikoden I. Each character belongs to the 108 Stars of Destiny.


2) Is Leon Silverberg related to Mathiu Silverberg?

Answer: Yes, he is Mathiu and Odessa Silverberg's uncle.


3) Why did Odessa Silverberg mention that Leon Silverberg is her father?

Answer: Regardless of what the game said, Odessa is Leon's niece and not his daughter. This is just another mistranslation on the part of the developers.


4) Who is Geil Rugner as mentioned in some part of the story?

Answer: He is the former emperor of the Scarlet Moon Empire whom Barbarossa dethroned in the War of Succession.


5) What is the War of Succession?

Answer: A war that ignited 10 years before the Toran Liberation War. It is a feud between members of royalty, Barbarossa Rugner and his uncle Geil Rugner. While Barbarossa is busy fighting the Jowston Alliance to the north, his uncle grabbed the throne and claimed himself emperor of Scarlet Moon Empire. Barbarossa fought back and defeated his uncle despite the overwhelming odds he faced.


6) What happened to Geil Rugner during War of Succession?

Answer: He was killed during the war.


7) In Suikoden I manual, there are 6 Great Imperial Generals featured. Why is it that there are only 5 mentioned in the game?

Answer: The sixth general is actually Georg Prime who appeared in Suikoden II and Suikoden V. He wanders off somewhere away from the Scarlet Moon Empire shortly after the War of Succession ended. That explains why he is absent during the Toran Liberation War.


8) Is there a way to save Teo McDohl from being killed?

Answer: Nope. Teo McDohl died in the process. His death is actually essential for the Souleater Rune to become more powerful than it was before.


9) What is this Rune of Life and Death I had been reading in some Suikoden forums?

Answer: It is the fan translation given to the Souleater Rune. Some fans are not quite satisfied with the English translations of the developers.


10) Is it true that Leknaat and Windy are really sisters?

Answer: They are actually clan sisters and not directly related by blood. They both came from the Gate Rune Clan.


11) Where is the Gate Rune Clan? Why is it not featured in the game?

Answer: The Gate Rune Clan had been long gone for about 400 years before the Toran Liberation War started. The whole clan was obliterated by the Holy Kingdom of Harmonia about 80 years before Windy attacked the Village of the Hidden Rune. Only Windy and Leknaat managed to survived the plight.


12) Is the Gate Rune one of the 27 True Runes?

Answer: Yes.


13) Why is it that there are two Gate Runes?

Answer: There is only one Gate Rune but it is composed of two separate Runes. These are the Front Gate Rune and the Back Gate Rune, which are attached on Windy and Leknaat respectively.


14) I heard Stallion possessed a True Holy Rune but it looks like its not present in the game. Where can I find it?

Answer: The Godspeed Rune attached on Stallion is actually the True Holy Rune. Rumors has it that it was named that way in Suikoden II due to possible poor translation on the part of the developers. Nevertheless, the name True Holy Rune is retained in Suikoden IV.


15) What is a jujube mentioned by Viktor when they are about to pass through Kwaba Fortress?

Answer: Jujube is a berry-like fruit native in the warmer regions of Eurasia. It is formerly used as an herbal medicine for cough.


16) According to Luc, he is Lady Leknaat's number one apprentice. Does she had more apprentice aside from him?

Answer: Sarah from Suikoden III is probably one of Leknaat's apprentice. Nevertheless, she must be still young to become her student during the Toran Liberation War.


17) Why did Kuromimi call himself as "Black Ears?" Is this his epithet?

Answer: It is still not confirmed if Black Ears is Kuromimi's epithet. But one thing is sure though, his name literally means "black ears" in Japanese.

Suikoden I Fun Facts

1) In Sega Saturn version of Suikoden I, the pirates Anji, Leonardo and Kanak kidnapped one of the girls in the Liberation Army. This part of the story was not present in Playstation, but instead Tir and Tai Ho challenged the pirates directly in their hideout.

2) The floating fortress Shasarazade was probably derived from "Scheherazade." The latter is the name of a legendary Persian queen who is believed to be the storyteller behind the Arabian Nights or the One Thousand and One Nights.

3) Tir was originally designed to wield a sword but was later dropped by the developers in order to bring a more Chinese style on his character. They replaced it with bo staff which perfectly complements his background in martial arts as taught by his mentor Kai.

4) Tir has no in-game name and is simply called by his last name, McDohl. This was retained in Suikoden II and Suikoden III as long as you didn't use a copy of saved games from Suikoden I.

5) Although the name Tir is not canonically used in Suikoden series, yet it is the most widely accepted name given to the main protagonist. It was taken from the 1999 novelization of the game called Genso Suikoden Soul Eater.


6) In Playstation Portable (PSP) version released in 2006, some menus in Suikoden I was updated to make it more like Suikoden II.

7) The Silver Armor and Darkness Rune are two nifty items in Suikoden I that are missing from its first inception in 1995. They were introduced later for Sega Saturn version and were retained for Playstation Portable.

8) Cleo's weapons are obviously a type of throwing daggers, but were named as though they are swords.

9) Cleo has a diary in McDohl Mansion but its content is still a big mystery for it is unreadable.

12) Unlike his friends living in McDohl's household, Gremio is the only one who doesn't own a diary.

13) After saving the young Tir McDohl from his kidnappers, Gremio engraved the words "I will always protect Young Master" on his axe. Thus, his weapon is called the "Axe of Oath."

14) Gremio got his scars on his face after he dauntlessly saved the young Tir McDohl from his kidnappers.

15) The Liberation Army's chefs, Antonio and Lester, recognized Gremio's undeniable skill in cooking. In Suikoden II, you can't complete all the recipes available in the game without visiting Gremio in McDohl's Mansion. He will give Riou his closely guarded recipe after several cook-off matches.

16) Windy and Leknaat are always mentioned in the game as sisters, but they are not really blood related. They are rather clan sisters, since they both belong to the Clan of the Gates.

17) The Clan of the Gates were completely destroyed by an invasion of the Holy Kingdom of Harmonia. During the attack, Windy and Leknaat received the Front Gate and Back Gate Runes respectively.

18) The Front Gate and Back Gate Runes are two pieces of a single True Rune called the "Gate Rune."

19) Kirke's weapon is called Tower, Death and Judgment as it is sharpened respectively. All the names are obviously taken from tarot cards.

20) Did you know that Kirke passed down his scythe to Lorelai after the Toran Liberation War ended?

21) It is interesting to note that after Kirke gave his scythe to Lorelai she became a spear user in Suikoden II's normal battle. Nevertheless, she is still a member of the archer unit in the Allied Army when fighting in the battlefield.

22) Kreutz's sword is named as Denta, Big Denta and Kamui. Surprisingly, it shares names with the sword wielded by Genshu in Suikoden II. The only difference is that the former's weapon is a longsword while the latter's is a katana.

23) Another character that shares the same weapon names with Kreutz is Duke from Suikoden III. Unlike Genshu's katana, both are using a two-handed and double-edged longsword. The striking similarities of their weapon names led some Suikoden fans to speculate that the father of Duke to whom Nicolas once served is Kreutz.

24) The word Kamui is translated as "deity" in Ainu dialect of Japan.

25) Another name given to Kreutz's weapon is Denta. It was probably named to pay homage to a famous blacksmith who lived during the Muromachi-era in Japan. The katanas attributed to Denta are also called after him.

26) Categorically, all of Denta's works are classified as katana. Thus, Genshu's weapon is more appropriately classified than those of Kreutz and Duke's longswords.

27) Did you know that the Scarlet Moon Empire existed for more than two centuries? It was even mentioned during the Island Nations Liberation War as one of the existing nations at that time. The aforementioned event is about 150 years before the Toran Liberation War broke out.

28) It is interesting to note that there is not a single Dwarf who belongs to the 108 Stars of Destiny even though there are lots of them in Toran Republic. Nevertheless, the Elves and Kobolds have some distinguished members in the Liberation Army.

29) Obviously, the name Neclord is a portmanteau of "necro" and "lord." Necro is a Latin word which pertains to "death" or "corpse." Thus, his name literally means the "Lord of the Dead."

30) The Slasher Rabbits and Killer Rabbits are common enemies in both Suikoden I and Suikoden II. They also appeared in Suikoden III, but they are called Blade Bunny and Dark Hare respectively.

31) The Godspeed Rune that Stallion bears is also called True Holy Rune in Suikoden II. The translation may be a bit different but the power it holds is the same.

32) Stallion had his Godspeed Rune embedded on his right hand in Suikoden I. But did you know that the rune is embedded on his head in Suikoden 2?

33) Leknaat is indeed blind, but why did she call Tir McDohl "cute"? This mystery is still left unanswered and keeps many Suikoden fans wondering while making a lot of speculations.

34) In one event, Kuromimi commanded the kobold units to follow "Black Ears," which obviously a reference to him. His name is literally translated as "black ears" in Japanese.
